(CNN) — Tomorrow, millions of Americans will cross the threshold for their Thanksgiving Thanksgiving celebrations. But who knows how busy it will be?

By the time you finish eating, watching movies, watching football and flipping through magazines, time might run out for a needed four hours of sleep. That is because if your travel plans include connecting flights, Thanksgiving travel can be a logistical nightmare.

“If you’re flying to or from an airport in another city, it is in your best interest to avoid connecting flights,” says Seth Kaplan, chief industry analyst for trade publication Airline Weekly. “I would suggest flying direct to your destination.”

Before you click the “check-in” button, you need to make sure your airline knows the airport you’re flying out of, says Ryan Mac, a United Airlines meteorologist. If you’re flying anywhere less than a 200 miles from an airport you know, travel plans could go terribly awry, he says.

Check with your travel agency

If you’re traveling by car, be sure to coordinate with your travel agent, travel club or car rental company to find connections in your itinerary, suggests airline industry analyst Stephen Leatherman.
