Martial arts turned motorsport is expanding with Formula 1’s next season when the Miami Grand Prix arrives in 2022.

The deal was signed by Formula 1’s bosses and they will return Miami to the grid with a revised calendar.

“It means Miami is where the international motor sport world should be. It will bring tourism, it will bring economic development and will put South Florida and Miami on the map,” the US region president Mike Gossett told local Miami TV station WSVN.

Under the deal, Formula 1 will be the top international promoter to help develop the ground floor of the Miami Grand Prix and work with local promoters.

Miami will host a race from 2022-2023, taking place each year during the US season.

“Miami holds a tremendous amount of significance to Formula 1,” said Formula 1 chairman Chase Carey in a statement.

“This will be a thrilling new chapter for our sport and our partners. I can’t wait to see what incredible things will happen as we continue to build on Formula 1’s extraordinary history in South Florida.”

A Miami race will be the fifth Formula 1 race on the calendar following the three cities that host races in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and the United States.

Formula 1 held its first race in Indianapolis in 1991.

The decision to return Miami was announced on Wednesday.

Miami previously hosted two grands prix in 1972 and 1979, but they were cancelled before the first modern races in 2007.

The US has been particularly supportive of the Miami race, with Carey saying it was a good opportunity to bring more people to the area.
