CNN honors 10 men and women for making the world a better place

Last week I wrote about how CNN’s 20th annual Inspiration Awards reflect some of the most inspiring stories of the year, including Ava DuVernay’s Selma, Kristen Schaal’s podcast, The Core, and Tom Morello’s tireless work for California’s fracking ban.

This year CNN honours 10 men and women who have made a difference in their own communities and those of others.

But I also noted that many of these women are hidden in the news reports we read, such as New York City school teacher Felicia Goulden, who was driving home from her bar mitzvah at a salon when she felt something grab at her waist. After a moment of confusion and stress, she pulled over, thinking she had fainted. When she took her foot off the brake, she could feel the heat and pressure on her neck and started bleeding.

A $20,000 (£15,500) reward and a meeting with legislators in Albany helped her recover in the nick of time. But she tells CNN: “The biggest lesson I learned is you can do whatever you want if you just take action and work towards it.”
